After you have installed the basic version of linux, the basic thing we got to do is install the required softwares., the basic softwares being vlc media player, classic media player codecs, abiWord, skype, unRar, etc.
The possible things we could do are:
1>Use Synaptic package management/ Ubuntu software center
2>Use Terminal (apt-get and all,..
3>Use the handy installation files.
Well, the problem we face with the first two ways is the BANDWIDTH. Of course i agree that its not an issue for most of the users. But still i categorize it to be a problem. There are many users who have access to the internet through some mobile devices(smart phones, androids, etc..) But unless they install the appropriate drivers, i dont think they could get their systems would be given the net access. However, they can surf the net in their handy mobiles and even download the files. What i mean to say is, in some or the other way, ANY USER can arrange the offline installation files i.e., <3>option and later on can install them in the respective LINUX.
I am focusing on UBUNTU here. So, i speak of only two files.
1>'deb' files
2>'tar' balls
As for now, i speak of <1>deb files@debian files.
(You'll know, our UBUNTU is a Debian distribution. :p)
Once you have the .deb file with you, just follow the following steps:
1>Open the terminal window. traverse to that directory containing your .deb file.
use 'cd' command to do that. like 'cd Desktop/files/'
2>now, type the following command and hit enter.
'sudo dpkg -i package_name.deb'
It prompts the user for the password. Just type in the password associated with your account and proceed(hit enter)
Thats it, the dpkg manager automatically places the program files in the respective directories assigns the menu item path and all. thereby, your package(say-skype) appears in the applications menu.
So far, i have covered only the usage of .deb files.
